On a cloudless spring afternoon, sun beamed down brightly from the blue sky onto the roof of the Sugar Hill Project site at St. Nicholas Avenue and 155th Street in West Harlem.
Still under construction, the 13-story building will soon comprise a unique combination of affordable housing, education and culture.
When the building opens in early 2014, it will offer 124 apartments for low-income or previously homeless families, an early education center for preschoolers and also a children's museum.
Financed largely by philanthropic donations, the facility is being developed by Broadway Housing Communities, which sponsors innovative permanent housing for low-income populations, such as the Dorothy Day Apartments on Riverside Drive.

Advocates for the Immigrants Voting Rights Bill gathered at City Hall.
They pay taxes, own businesses, contribute to the local economy.
They are affected by decisions made by elected officials—but they can’t vote.
This may change for an estimated 850,000 documented immigrants living in New York City, as the Immigrants Voting Rights Bill would allow documented immigrants who have resided in city limits for at least six months to vote in municipal elections.
The first hearing on the bill was held this past Thurs., May 9th, and supporters of the bill gathered at the steps of City Hall to voice their support beforehand.

A recent meeting on nightlife issues drew a full house.
Dyckman.
For those who visit any one or many of its various restaurants, bars and lounges, it is a prime destination for socializing and revelry.
For those who live on or nearby the corridor, and call it home, it can be a little more complicated.
This past Thurs., May 9th, a public meeting hosted by Community Board 12 had as its primary agenda area nightlife and quality of life issues, including concerns about liquor licenses, noise and public nuisance complaints, and traffic.

As summer approaches, we have ever more reason to spend time outdoors and break a sweat.
Our children too should be out, and learning to enjoy chasing, hitting or kicking a ball; swinging a racket; or running relays, etc.
Whatever will engage our children in healthful physical activity, and take into account their particular interests, is a win for the whole family – and for our communities.
When it comes to getting our kids motivated to keep active and fit, there’s nothing more encouraging than finding a great team sport or unique activity that they enjoy.

Moose Hall actors Robert Dyckman (left) as Edgar and Warren Jackson (right) as Edmund rehearse their fight.
This is the fifth in a series of articles about Moose Hall Theatre Company’s upcoming summer season.
Moose Hall Theatre Company’s production of King Lear is cast.
And only just a few days after the first read-through, the actors playing Edmund and Edgar had already had a fight.
With swords – and as encouraged by the director.
