Exhibited: Berkshire Bank, 210 Pinehurst Avenue at W. 187th Street
Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Fridays 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM with special hours on Sunday, June 13
Against a palette of light and dark blue skies and white and gray clouds stand two buildings, a representation of our neighborhoods.
The fire escapes climb towards the clouds, where the roofs of the buildings create a boundary between nature and that which is man-made.
“The fire escapes silhouetted against the sky so typify our neighborhood street scenes and home life, but the drama of the sun and clouds transform the ordinary into a sparkling vista,” said the artist, Hudson Heights resident Karen Loew.
Fascinated with the interplay between the environment around us and the architecture we interact with everyday, Loew has captured a snippet of that mix in her painting, “Cloudscape over Bennett Avenue.”
Prior to its debut in Berkshire Bank, the painting was exhibited in Gallery M (123 W 135th Street) as part of the Harlem Open Artist Studio Tour in the fall of 2009. Now, the painting is a part of Loew’s solo exhibit at the bank which will be featured during the Uptown Arts Stroll that takes place this June in Northern Manhattan. With eight paintings in the show now, she’ll add one more every week until June 13.
Loew, who says she has “been drawing since I could hold a crayon,” is currently working on another neighborhood piece: a scene of the George Washington Bridge and the Little Red Lighthouse is in the works for a show at the Salmagundi Club in Midtown. At the end of that show, June 4, the painting will be mounted in Berkshire Bank, joining an earlier version of the Little Red Lighthouse and a painting of the bridge in Spuyten Duyvil, fresh from an exhibit in Holland.
Luckily for Loew, there is no shortage of nature and humanity, as she put it, in Northern Manhattan.
“[‘Cloudscape’] is the view from my kitchen window that faces south; a view where I watch nature at play!” she said.
