With City Council set to vote next week on Columbia University’s plans for building up its athletic facilities on W. 218th Street around Baker Field, this week community members posted an online petition calling on the university to provide more concessions.

By the morning of Fri., April 1 the petition had 429 signatures.

As the university’s plans have unfolded over the last couple of years, it has laid out many new community benefits in its action plan. But local residents and leaders, noting that the university is devoting far less of the property to public space than the 15 percent that is required under zoning regulations, believe Columbia should give much more.

Some of the benefits they have asked for include more educational and recreational opportunities for local children; greater access to the waterfront, athletic facilities, and community meeting space; and expanded scholarships for local youth.

The petition also seeks greater construction and security related commitments.
