It’s a sunny hot day on Academy Street in Inwood. Heat radiates up from the pavement and down from the sun above, the only relief is from small pools of shade cast onto the sidewalks planted this spring through the city’s MillionTrees program.

Voting on a new machine
It’s about as simple as voting can get. The Board of Elections has been touring Northern Manhattan for the last week demonstrating its new voting machines, which are essentially computer scanners that read a paper ballot that voters fill out.

Did you know that on Sun., Aug. 15 a large contingent of about 400 young folks, from across the city, converged on the tail end of Dyckman Fields for an impromptu block party called the 40 Oz Bounce? The fact that this event was promoted and conducted by the 40 Oz crew using Twitter, Facebook, their extensive social media network and word of mouth, makes the function that more remarkable.
