Firefighter John Coombs spoke to prospective FDNY recruits in Northern Manhattan about the benefits and rewards of a career with the department during a recruitment event held last week in Washington Heights.
About a dozen Northern Manhattan residents attended a recruitment event held last week on Mon. Aug 22nd, organized by the Hispanic Society, the Fire Department of New York, and the Office of Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez.

For the past seven years, New York Presbyterian Hospital has been hosting a health fair focused on livery taxi drivers who work in Northern Manhattan.

Shabbar Ali, owner and manager of Burhan Hardware Store, the new hardware at 4947 Broadway in Inwood stands with his two staffers, Anthony Aguilar, and Roberto Arias. Ali explains that customers have been very welcoming. “The reaction has been great,” he says.

Michael Pena, the off-duty cop accused of raping a 25 year-old Inwood schoolteacher on Fri., Aug. 19th, is in protective custody at Rikers Island, held on $1 million bond.

An empanada is a small stuffed pastry bread. The pastry, filled with meat, cheese, or fruit can be either baked or fried, depending on the chef and his or her recipe.

“Only in El Alto” is a phrase I hear often among local friends, in local businesses, at the local bar. Every now and then, someone will find or refer to something so classically El Alto, that they must credit its existence to the neighborhood.

Hey Uptown, I write this recap from the picturesque country of the Dominican Republic. While Hurricane Irene hit most of you once, I actually met her a few days earlier in the DR. Luckily for me and the rest of the island, it was mostly rain and a pretty scary cross-country trip while she was in full swing. Then as I was preparing to return to NYC, our flight was cancelled and our flight back was delayed for a full week. I guess there are worse places to be stranded in.
