Northern Manhattan’s black historySugar Hill Banner

An interactive map based on census numbers from as early as 1910 shows the growth of African Americans in Washington Heights and Inwood, slide by slide, like stop animation. The map is a feature of Social Explorer, a demographics Web site that compiles census data previously only accessible by social science experts.

It tells the story of two black communities: one to the southeast called Sugar Hill, the famous crown of Harlem, and the other in Inwood branching out from the Dyckman Houses, which were built in 1951 on 10th Avenue. Read More

Coogan’s Salsa, Blues and Shamrocks 5K run on March 7

Coogan’s Restaurant’s annual 5K run will be held on Sun., March 7 at 9 a.m. Officially titled Coogan’s Salsa, Blues and Shamrocks 5K the race kicks off near W. 168th Street and heads north on Ft.
