After teaching for four years in Northern Manhattan, Christina Reyes was frustrated. She saw students she had mentored and taught being accepted to college, and then dropping out after one semester. Her students, whose first language is Spanish, couldn’t write well enough in English to perform at the college level. Hudson Heights’ beloved Sushi Yu II on W. 181st Street saw a new sushi place open across the street. A coffee shop with aspirations of becoming a wine bar was closed and replaced by a coffee-shop-wine-bar in Inwood, and the new Spanish tapas restaurant opening in Washington Heights is focusing on regional cuisine from Galicia, Spain – coincidentally the focus of the neighborhood’s existing Spanish restaurant, Galicia Restaurant, a few blocks south on Broadway and W. 172 Street.
