At I.S. 218 on Broadway near Sherman Avenue, a school room that was built to be a cooking instruction area is now an office. It wasn’t changed to an office – the sinks are still there – it’s just being used as an office.

Guaranteed, no one was cold in the offices of the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation on. Jan. 8. In fact, employees there were almost literally up to their necks in coats.

First WaMu branch to close


The Dyckman Street and Broadway WaMu branch, which was the first WaMu in Northern Manhattan when it opened in late 2004, will be the first to close as part of a consolidation of the beleaguered bank into its parent company, JPMorgan Chase.

On a rainy Thursday, ConEd M29 Project Manager Jim Shannon traces his fingers over blueprints in a trailer. When the plans in front of him are realized, there will be a 700-foot-long tunnel under the Harlem River connecting the Bronx and Northern Manhattan.

The recording’s voice is warm and convincing but when you press “4” for the dispatcher, a nasty, it’s-not-my-fault, let me blame the Division of Pupil Personnel male dispatcher interacts with you. And you better not have attitude because if you show any, the nasty, it’s-not-my-fault dispatcher will scold you and treat you as if he is doing you a favor.
