There’s always something new on W. 181st Street

Contributed by Angelina Ramirez, executive director of the Washington Heights Business Improvement District

As I look around Washington Heights, I can’t help but think of the old proverb, “The only thing constant in life is change.”

A show of force – and a new Bronx twist – for the livery cab issue

A rally held at City Hall to protest proposed changes to the livery cab industry brought out hundreds of drivers, base owners and elected officials who denounced the plan to expand yellow medallion cab service.

It might have been harder than usual to find a cab, even a livery cab, on the streets of the Bronx or northern Manhattan this past Thurs., May 26th.

Community Board 12 Roundup, May 24

The following is a summary of the items that came up at the monthly Community Board 12 General Meeting at the Russ Berrie Pavilion on Tue., May 24.

Using art to cross the generations

The four colorful quilts depict a variety of landscapes – a blend of city and Caribbean imagery – at different times of day: dawn, midday, afternoon, and evening. But for the 17 or so seniors and young people who created them during a collaborative art project, they also represent the different stages of life.

Call for art for A-train elevators

In collaboration with the MTA, local arts organization Artists Unite is staging the third round of the “Subway Elevator Poster Project,” inviting artists living in Manhattan north of W. 155th Street to submit work to be considered for installation in the elevators at the 181st Street (at the W. 184th Street entrance) and 190th Street A-train stations.

P.S. 98 students raise money for D.C. trip

A group of 4th graders from P.S. 98 is fundraising for a trip to Washington, D.C. in June and stopped at the Inwood Center at 5030 Broadway last week to pick up a $500 donation from building owners Edison Properties. So far the students have raised about half the $6,500 needed to cover transportation and lodging costs for 44 students and 16 parent chaperones.

Living el Alto: To the rhythm of bachata

Developed in the early 20
th
Century, Bachata’s signature sound played to the beat of an acoustic guitar. As the genre developed and modernized, the metallic riff of the electric guitar has become the staple of the emblematic tune.

One of the founding fathers of the genre:

Por que me hiciste creer en ti si no sentías amor por mi? [Why did you make me believe if you didn’t feel love for me?] from “Quiero Emborracharme” by Edilio Paredes.

Attention...Attention!

by Luis Miranda

The present situation that threatens the viability of community livery bases reminds me of a sub-plot in my son Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical, “In the Heights.” The musical takes place in Washington Heights and highlights a livery base as a vital business in the neighborhood. In the show, the base – owned by the Rosarios – ended up being sold because of economic circumstances. In real life, all livery bases are in danger if a proposal to link yellow medallions and livery cabs is approved by the City Council.

“High Style.” That’s the tagline being attached to Washington Heights’ newest real estate development to hit the market: two six-story condominiums located at 350 Wadsworth Ave. and 42 Wadsworth Terrace near W. 191st Street a block from St. Nicholas Avenue.

UC Recap - May 23 - May 28

May 23 – May 28

A big 1-year anniversary shout out is in order to the good folks at Corcho Wine Room (231 Dyckman Street). Before they even officially opened up, Benlly Polanco and Vladimir Garcia showed the Uptown Collective love and gave us a first look at their fine establishment. Thanks Corcho for injecting a dose of sophistication, substance and style to Uptown.
