A month of Uptown Art

 

Friday, June 5 is the official start of the 9th Annual Uptown Arts Stroll – the yearly celebration of local visual and performing artists in the community. The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, in its second year organizing the stroll will kick-off the 30-day celebration with a reception from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at NoMAA’s newly expanded offices and gallery at the Cornerstone Center 178 Bennett Avenue at 189th Street.

At the reception, NoMAA will have a special presentation to this year’s honorees Jazz musicians Marjorie Elliot and Miguel Zenon. Elliot’s Jazz Parlor performances, held in her home at 555 Edgecombe Avenue become an Uptown institution. Zenon a Pinehurst Avenue resident and 2008 MacArthur Fellow was awarded a no-strings-attached grant of $500,000 by the MacArthur Foundation in October. Zenon’s music fuses jazz with Latin forms of music. 

The kickoff will also feature an exhibition of and performances by 2008/2009 NoMAA grantees. Between the kickoff and Saturday June 13, there are 19 scheduled events, including “Returning the Gift,” a group show and charity auction to benefit Broadway Housing Authority’s Rio Gallery on June 6, the Chapbook Festival continues with a poetry reading on June 6. On June 13 Edgar Cortes Dance Theater premieres “Unicorns,” inspired by The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestry displayed in the Metropolitan Art Museums permanent collection displayed at the Cloisters Museum in Ft. Tryon Park.

“Unicorns” will be performed in Fort Tryon Park at 6 p.m.
