Based on his preliminary analysis of several key pieces of data, Angelo Ortiz of Inwood Community Services knows that Northern Manhattan teenagers are at risk of being underage drinkers. He recently counted 184 businesses with alcohol licenses per square mile in Inwood; in the last decade hospitalization for alcohol-related issues in the area has increased 35 percent; and a Community Health Survey conducted by the Department of Health in 2008 revealed that 15 percent of local youths reported that they had been binge drinking in the last 30 days.

Link found between lack of sleep and depression in teens
Parents can reduce the risk of depression and suicidal thoughts in their teenagers by simply setting earlier bedtimes, say researchers at Columbia University Medical Center. According to a new study published in the scientific journal Sleep in January, there is a connection between shorter sleep durations in adolescents and the likelihood for depression and suicidal thoughts.

Senior Corner: Alone but not lonely

Some of us choose to live alone and some of us find ourselves living alone - not by choice but because we have lost our spouses and partners. It can be hard to adjust to living alone especially when we are grieving and especially if we have been sharing living space with others for many years. Our home feels empty. There is no one to share the events of our day with when we come home. A comment about a neighbor’s new curtains or remarks on the cuteness of a nearby 4-year-old remain unspoken and live only in our thoughts.
