The Adventures of an NYC Mama

As the title aptly conveys, this blogger is a mother who writes about her escapades raising children with her husband in New York City, specifically Washington Heights. The author writes that she is not a native to the area but is Dominican and has a unique perspective living in what she terms a rapidly gentrifying area. She herself writes, “I live here because it was the only place we could find a large enough apartment for our family of 5, in the NYC, that we could afford.” She is open about her discomfort living between the worlds of “Hudson Heights” and “Washington Heights.” One can only hope that she will continue to speak about the challenges of coming to Washington Heights for the same reasons as the “gentrifiers” she mentions living in Hudson Heights and her self-described “barrio.”

Lost My Mother and Buried My Mind

An only child's experiences surrounding the death of her mother from Alzheimer's Disease.

Connie Vasquez is a practicing attorney, cardiac yoga teacher and life coach who lives in Inwood. Her mother recently passed away after struggling for years with Alzheimer's disease. Connie’s blog is all about her own struggle to deal with her mother’s passing. She writes it with the hopes of helping others through their own similar journeys.

Her honest description of the emotional abyss of bereavement has an optimism and humor about it that is inspiring and hopeful. You too can come through this experience stronger and more resilient, but it’s more than likely going to be a tough road to hoe. Connie is also a contributor to www.opentohope.com, a Web site dedicated to helping people find hope after a loved one’s death.

The Morning News

Black and White and Read All Over

In a very old post, three Internet years is like 20 human years, but the writing is still crisp and enticing. A group of writers ply their trade for a day, chronicling what life in their corner of the big city looks, sounds, smells and feels like. Writer Lauren Frey, who may or may not still live here, writes about Inwood. Enjoy her jetlagged tale of woe via Northern Manhattan.
