Bette Midler (above) to look after forgotten parks in New York City.

In 1995, world famous entertainer Bette Midler drove down the West Side Highway with her daughter Sophie in tow. The shores of the Hudson River were blanketed in garbage. Car parts, tires, furniture, littered the forest floor.
NMIC Executive Director Barbara Lowry, who has been with the organization for 30 years, and her staff.
Thirty years ago the future of Northern Manhattan was grim. Like the city as a whole, the community was reeling from a fiscal crisis. Residents left; drugs stayed. Newly arriving immigrants were being taken advantage of by landlords. Building conditions deteriorated. Where the city couldn’t help, charitable organizations tried to fill in the gaps.

863 Riverside
Drive is tucked away on a quiet stretch of the meandering road.
Often parts of Northern Manhattan don’t feel like New York City, or even the metropolitan area. The 40 Oz Bounce Gone Loko event, which took place Sat., Sep. 11 underneath the looming presence of the GWB, was in one word, epic. Every 40 Oz Bounce function seems to be bigger than the last and this one had a decidedly Warriors kind of feel to it, with 40 Oz Van and his cohorts playing the role of Cyrus, rounding up folks from all over the city and beyond for a little shindig. In total, there was easily a thousand plus people who answered the call to be a part of something historic. Check out the site for pictures and video of the festivities.
