The New York Restoration Project was started 15 years ago by actress
Bette Midler (above) to look after forgotten parks in New York City.

by Laura Gabby

In 1995, world famous entertainer Bette Midler drove down the West Side Highway with her daughter Sophie in tow. The shores of the Hudson River were blanketed in garbage. Car parts, tires, furniture, littered the forest floor.

NMIC celebrates 30 years helping tenants with housing

Thirty years ago the future of Northern Manhattan was grim. Like the city as a whole, the community was reeling from a fiscal crisis. Residents left; drugs stayed. Newly arriving immigrants were being taken advantage of by landlords. Building conditions deteriorated. Where the city couldn’t help, charitable organizations tried to fill in the gaps.

New York City sidewalks are dirty, for sure, but one pigeon poop plastered stretch of Dyckman Street is out of hand. (follow the link for a short slide show)

Brides March set for Sep. 26

On Sun., Sep. 26, the annual Brides March will start at 8
a.m. at Fort Washington Heights Presbyterian Church at 21 Wadsworth Ave. at W. 174th Street.

A bride’s march is supposed to be a step into a new, better life. Gladys Ricart was supposed to march down the isle on Sep. 26, 1999 but was gunned down by a jealous ex-boyfriend on her wedding day.

When Emmanuel Xenopoulos and his son Evan bought Plum Pomidor in January, they knew they wanted to keep the neighborhood hangout feel that brought the after work crowds to the popular night spot. But they also wanted to put their own spin on the restaurant.

They call it “the newest music for the oldest instrument.” And that’s just what it is – contemporary music for the voice.

L’Chaim

By Luis Miranda

Two weeks ago my son Lin-Manuel got married. The wedding was a spectacular event where music served as thread connecting the diverse musical tastes of friends, family and coursing through an entire weekend of events. For Lin-Manuel music has always been something like the lacework on a medieval court-maiden’s dress. There was never a family event of any importance that wasn’t embroidered with a musical number that Lin-Manuel created to entertain our guests.

On the Market: 863 Riverside Drive

863 Riverside
Drive is tucked away on a quiet stretch of the meandering road.

Often parts of Northern Manhattan don’t feel like New York City, or even the metropolitan area. A short stretch of Riverside Drive, the meandering view-packed street that harkens back to men in hats and women wearing pearls out for a Sunday drive, feels like it could be tucked away in a much smaller city.

Mom’s Picks for the Week of September 24-October 1

Little Red Lighthouse, children’s theater and harvest readings

Summer may be over, but there are still plenty of outdoor opportunities for Inwood and Washington Heights families this weekend. Make the most of the mild weather while you can!

Uptown Collective: The Recap Sept 13 to Sept 18

September 13 – September 18

The 40 Oz Bounce Gone Loko event, which took place Sat., Sep. 11 underneath the looming presence of the GWB, was in one word, epic. Every 40 Oz Bounce function seems to be bigger than the last and this one had a decidedly Warriors kind of feel to it, with 40 Oz Van and his cohorts playing the role of Cyrus, rounding up folks from all over the city and beyond for a little shindig. In total, there was easily a thousand plus people who answered the call to be a part of something historic. Check out the site for pictures and video of the festivities.
