Awards

In nine years of publishing, the Manhattan Times has earned several awards.

2008

The New York Press Association awarded the 2008 Dining Guide first place for special sections.

The judges, from newspaper groups in New England and Pennsylvania, lauded the publication, called it, "Eye catching, easy to read, bilingual, good format [and] convenient size."

They went on to say: "It's a 'keeper' readers would refer to throughout the year!"

The MT also picked up a third-place prize for it dining listings, which appear every week in the paper.

Judges said the pages were: "A nice way to feature the variety of dining options in this market. Nice use of color and graphics."

Torah Cover

2007

The New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest awarded two Manhattan Times cover stories third place award for “best coverage of religion.” The stories were “The end of the folk Mass?,” about the future of a musical service at Good Shepherd Church, and “Restoring the Torah,” about the congregation at Hebrew Tabernacle giving a helping hand – literally – in applying fresh ink to the synagogue’s ancient holy books.

The judges from the North Carolina Press Association praised the Manhattan Times coverage as a “Nice blend of religion and changing times. I got a sense of the communities from both stories. They could easily have been ‘blow off’ stories, but Julia and Mike spent a little extra time on them and gave readers something extra.”

High Bridge

2006

The Independent Press Association on New York bestowed an Ippie Award upon the Manhattan Times, giving it third place for photo essay for a series of photographs taken by Mike Fitelson of a special gathering on the High Bridge.

2004

At the annual New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest the Manhattan Times took home three awards, winning third-place honors in its division for best front page, special section, and graphic illustration.

Eyebrow Threading

The winning entry for best front page included three cover stories – on overcrowding at Gregorio Luperon High School, auxiliary police officers, and eyebrow threading – with photographs by Mike Fitelson and Landa M. Towns and layout by Mauricio Muñoz. The judges, from the Texas Press Association, commented: “Great front page images that immediately get your attention.”Dining Guide

The award for special section was for “Northern Manhattan’s Dining Guide,” which the Manhattan Times published in conjunction with Audubon Partnership for Economic Development and the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone in December. Judges said: “Mind-blowing photography! Nicely written work but what sealed this prize for you was the seamless warm design that integrated the Spanish transitions. It made me hungry!”

IllustrationThe Manhattan Times’ submission for graphic illustration was the front page cover by Muñoz for the story “Where to drink sunrise to sundown.” The judges called the image of a coffee cup morphing into a high ball glass a “clever illustration.”
